ISRI’s communications team has received two prizes—including a Gold Award—in the MarCom Awards 2021 competition. The association received the Gold Award for the transformation of Scrap News into an all-digital news product. Honorable Mention went to the #WeAreISRI Salute to Members video.
“ISRI is constantly looking for ways to enhance member benefits and provide recyclers with tools for success,” says Mark Carpenter, ISRI’s vice president of communications. “The new Scrap News digital platform affords us the opportunity to provide members with more of the content they want daily, ensuring they are well-informed of all industry related news. ISRI is so grateful for our members and the work they do. The #WeAreISRI video is just a small way of showing how much they mean to us.”
On Jan. 1, 2021, ISRI launched Scrap News. The digital platform delivers daily recycling industry news, analysis, and information across the industry. The content draws upon ISRI’s advocacy, safety, environmental compliance, and educational efforts. This includes news articles focused on advocacy, operations and safety, international policy, commodity markets, and general industry. It also features thought leadership pieces and positive stories of ISRI members contributing to the industry and/or their communities.
On Jan. 1, ISRI also introduced:
- A three-times-per-week newsletter that also pulls content from other trade publications and uses artificial intelligence for a personalized feed for each reader.
- Faces of ISRI, a weekly column highlighting ISRI members and staff for their contributions.
- Industry Voices, a weekly column for thought leaders.
- A Community section featuring company and personnel submission forms and a monthly photo contest.
- A newsfeed on ISRI’s mobile app, ISRI Connect.
- This Week in Recycling, a weekly podcast featuring highlights from Scrap News and interviews with newsmakers.
- A monthly video recap of significant articles.
- A weekly infographic to share industry developments.
- Social media posts highlighting recently published ISRI news and events.
At its current pace, Scrap News will deliver about 500 pieces of content this year compared to 50 pieces in a comparable time from the old magazine. Scrap News amplifies breaking industry news based on ISRI’s advocacy efforts and information gathering.
Launched during the COVID-19 pandemic, the #WeAreISRI video is a thank-you to the people who dedicate their lives to the recycling industry. They keep ISRI and the industry strong—especially during the COVID time. “We wanted to provide a rallying cry to the industry,” ISRI Vice President of Marketing Jason Glei says. “The video speaks to the pride and resiliency of the industry as a whole—and how we’re critical to manufacturing supply chain operations.”
The video has appeared on social media including Facebook and LinkedIn, as well as ISRI’s website. Through the available channels, thousands of people have watched the video—1,300 on ISRI.org alone.
The MarCom Awards are an international creative competition that recognizes outstanding achievements by marketing and communication professionals. Entries come from corporate marketing and communication departments, advertising agencies, public relations firms, design shops, production companies, and freelancers.
The Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals (AMCP) runs the awards. The international organization consists of several thousand creative professionals. AMCP oversees awards and recognition programs, supplies judges, and sets standards for excellence. The judges are industry professionals who look for companies and individuals whose talents exceed a high standard of excellence and whose work serves as a benchmark for the industry.
More than 6,000 entries from 41 countries competed in the 2021 MarCom Awards. The Gold Award is presented to those entries judged to exceed the high standards of the industry norm. Twenty-four percent of entries were Gold Winners. Honorable Mention certificates are granted to those entries that meet the expectations of the judges. Ten percent of submissions received this honor.
