ReMA’s Director of Law Enforcement Outreach Todd Foreman attended last week’s Senate Bill 224 Advisory Board Committee meeting in Houston, Texas. Foreman serves on the advisory committee, which is part of the Motor Vehicle Crime Prevention Authority (MVCPA), that was formed when the Texas Senate passed SB 224 in 2023. Senate Bill 224 provides additional authority for MVCPA to provide funding to combat catalytic converter theft in Texas. The advisory committee is comprised of leaders from law enforcement, as well as the recycled materials and automotive industries.
Texas State Senator Carol Ann Alvarado (District 6) spoke to the committee about the importance of SB 224 and the partnership and committee involvement to help prevent catalytic converter theft. Sen. Avarado received recognition from the committee for her work on SB 224. Committee Chair Major Sharon Jones mentioned the importance of partnerships between law enforcement and the recycled materials industry saying, “…this is one community, one team, one fight.”

Law enforcement leaders from across the state spoke about how funding grants from the advisory committee have assisted them in preventing catalytic converter thefts. Numerous local law enforcement agencies have received funding for purchasing equipment such as innovative etching kits and resources, as well as funds for additional personnel and overtime pay for officers.
