Last month at ISRI2024, the organization’s board of directors elected Sean Daoud to the position of secretary/treasurer on the Executive Committee. Sean serves as vice president, treasurer, and shareholder of his family’s business, PNW Metal Recycling, Inc, which has five locations in Oregon and three locations in Washington state.
ReMA News connected with Sean to gain insights on his new role and the recycled materials industry.
ReMA News: What are you most excited about in your new role?
Sean: Being elected by your peers to represent the industry is a huge honor and responsibility. I’m excited to work with the current executive committee to learn from some of the best in the industry, and to help ReMA lead our industry on behalf of members to new heights. I’m also excited to share the love I have for what we do every day with others who are not in our industry to increase knowledge of why we’re essential.
ReMA News: You’re a multi-generational recycler, can you tell us how that foundation has impacted your life and your contributions to the industry?
Sean: Having grown up around recycling, I learned early on that recycling is one of the very few industries that has an impact on everyone on the planet. The suppliers we work with to bring in material, the vendors we employ to help keep our businesses running, and the customers we sell to that need our products to make finished goods. Our industry helps provide sustainability to products and items we use in our daily lives. I learned a high level of respect for what it takes to run a recycling facility and I appreciate the sacrifice, grit, determination, and focus from our ReMA members to run good companies. Some of the many reasons why I fell in love with the industry many years ago, and why I want to represent the industry to help our members receive recognition for all the positive work they do.
ReMA News: What would you say to young professionals about the importance of getting involved with ReMA and seeking leadership roles?
Sean: First, I would thank anyone who wants to get involved to help our trade association and support our members. Second, I would suggest they start at the local level within the chapters and regions. All our local leaders are looking for new people to assist in leading with legislative, membership, board, and officer duties. Having a solid base of understanding what needs there are at the local level makes you a better leader at the national level, if they want to go to that level. The contact information for our chapters and regions is located on ReMA’s website, so it is easy to get connected and communicate that you want to do more.
ReMA News: What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
Sean: With two young children, my wife and I enjoy the “smaller things” right now, like time at the park or strolling around our neighborhood or short trips to visit family / friends…even a quiet morning enjoying coffee. Other things include golfing, trying new food, and traveling.
ReMA News: What else would you like to share?
Sean: I’m excited about the future of ReMA and our entire industry. We’re seeing great moments in advancing our industry and the essential importance it holds. I’m ready to work for our members and help ReMA continue its positive trajectory on elevating our industry’s position.
