Each year the Atlantic hurricane season officially runs from June 1 through Nov. 30. This year, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) anticipates a very active season, predicting an 85% chance of an above average season. It’s clear that the 2024 hurricane season is very much in full swing, with many record-breaking storms making landfall across the country.
ReMA has compiled a list of resources for those experiencing hurricanes and other natural disasters. We encourage all recyclers to take note of this list.
After the Storm/Recovery
- Wait until an area is declared safe before returning to your business location.
- Use caution before entering your business.
- Check for downed power lines. Never touch a power line and always assume they are live. If any electrical equipment is wet or damaged, contact an electrician or the local power authority.
- Check for gas leaks and structural damage. Stay away from unsafe structures.
- Prepare loss information for insurance claims and get independent estimates of damages.
- Take pictures before cleanup.
- Minimize additional damage.
Additional Recovery Resources
- U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) resources for natural disasters.
- EPA’s Disaster Debris Recovery Tool outlining some state plans and guidance, Federal agency resources, training resources, and OSHA information.
