ISRI sends its deepest condolences to the family of Albert Skalovsky, who passed away Jan. 22 at the age of 91. Born in Sioux City, Iowa, on March 20, 1930, Mr. Skalovsky is survived by his wife, Shirley, of 67 years, his sons Edward and Ron; his daughters Karla and Staci Skalovsky Minchen; five grandchildren; two great grandchildren, and his sisters Nikki Singer and Libby Marks.
One of five children, Mr. Skalovsky began working in his family’s recycling business at an early age. He attended the University of Oklahoma (OU) where he received a business degree in accounting. While working on his master’s degree, he was drafted into the army as a Second lieutenant in artillery. He met and married Shirley during his army service.
Mr. Skalovsky took charge of Standard Iron & Metal Co., LLC and Standard Steel Co., LLC at the age of 30 following the unexpected death of his father. He worked six days a week until the age of 91. Mr. Skalovsky was an active member of ISRI, serving on the board of the ISRI Gulf Coast Chapter.
In addition to being devoted to his family and his work, Mr. Skalovsky played in dance bands as a hobby. He had the privilege of playing with the Oklahoma City Symphony Orchestra at the inaugural ball of former Gov. Henry Bellmon. Mr. Skalovsky loved jazz, classical music, history, baseball, bowling, OU football, and all things recycling. He was also a member of Emanuel Synagogue for decades where he served on the board of directors and held other officer positions over the years. He also served as president of B’nai B’rith International, a Jewish service organization.
In lieu of flowers, Mr. Skalovsky’s family suggests memorial donations be made to The Brookwood Community in Brookshire, Texas, a community that serves adults with disabilities.
