ISRI’s 2021 Spring Committee and Board of Directors Meetings came to a close Friday, May 14. Here are highlights of the final day.
Board of Directors
The Board of Directors elected as directors at large Dan Garvin of Colorado Iron & Metal, Jacqueline Lotzkar of Pacific Metals Recycling International, and Andrew Lincoln of Lincoln Recycling. Each will serve a two-year term. The board voted to amend ISRI bylaws to clarify the leadership roles of associate members as follows:
- Associate members can make up no more than one-third of a chapter board;
- Associate members may be elected to serve at the chapter level only as officers or directors at large with full voting rights;
- If an associate member ascends to the role of chapter president, then the chapter elects an active member to serve as a chapter representative for his/her full term to hold the vote;
- The same associate member cannot be nominated for the national associate voting seat.
Environmental justice was on the board’s agenda after committees reviewed ISRI’s policy. The board approved a statement saying, in part, “We in the recycling industry strive to engage with our communities to achieve mutual understanding and shared goals for the success of all members of the community. It is the recycling industry’s desire that all voices are heard, injustice is avoided, and shared objectives are achieved in ways that are economically and operationally beneficial for all.”
At the board’s direction, task forces will look into a possible rebranding of ISRI to better reflect marketplace conditions, and the association’s policy on extended producer responsibility programs applied to residential recycling.
Equipment and Service Providers Council
The Equipment and Service Providers Council began with an update on trade issues. ISRI staff discussed advocacy efforts regarding the 25% tariff on shredder wear parts imported from China, which the Trump administration imposed in July 2018. The Marketing team discussed opportunities for the council to engage with ISRI members including the ISRI Commodity Roundtable in September and the ISRI Shredder Operations Forum in November.
ISRI asked the council for suggestions and ideas to make ISRI2022 in Las Vegas a successful event for exhibitors. Staff reviewed the exhibit hall floor plan and answered general convention questions. The council was asked to send any suggestions or questions to staff regarding ways to improve the ISRI experience for equipment and service providers.
