ISRI hosted its first-ever Technician and Advanced in-person program that attracted 40 attendees from across the country. The program was packed with comprehensive, hands-on knowledge to assist members in how to safely interact with electric vehicles (EVs) and Li-ion batteries. The ongoing program is a partnership between ISRI and the Energy Security Agency (ESA).

“Our first in-person, on-site training course received great feedback from attendees,” said Jerry Sjogren, ISRI’s senior director of safety. “After successfully completing the intensive program, participants were awarded with three certificates from the Institute of Motor Industries (IMI), ESA and Call2Recycle, respectively.”

Attendees learned the intricacies of safe battery handling from the moment it reaches a facility. “The Technician and Advanced course is essential to learning all aspects of battery handling safely,” said Sjogren. “Participants at the program in Ohio reviewed resistance, AC/DC power and the difference between the two. The training even included a match-up of EVs to run through testing and verifying before pulling plugs.”

According to Sjogren, the facility hosting the first training was geared specifically to battery safe handling and included features such as how to use special blankets to buy time if an EV catches fire. The fiber glass mesh blankets are designed to be dragged over an EV to block air flow, allowing for additional time to extinguish the fire.

The course is designed to equip recycling and dismantling professionals with the critical knowledge, skills and abilities needed to interact safely with EVs and Li-ion batteries. Students will receive ESA certificates of completion and IMI certification in battery pack dismantling operations. The course structure provides a high-energy and interactive balance of classroom and academic sessions with practical hands-on labs at the state-of-the-art ESA/Energy Safety Response Group (ESRG) alternative energy testing lab in Ohio.

Instructors for the Technician course are highly specialized professionals from ESA who operate in the emergency services and industrial safety services sectors.
