This week, Sunnking, an electronics recycler in Brockport, N.Y., presented an $11,761 check to a nonprofit called Camp Good Days and Special Times, based in Mendon, N.Y., which helps children and families living with cancer.
Sunnking raised the funds through its 10th annual e-Scrap for Camp fundraiser. Nearly 350 area businesses donated their used electronics, despite the ongoing pandemic and a months-long layover.
“We were really worried about having great participation, but the community loves it; they ask about it year-round,” says Adam Shine, vice president of Sunnking. “I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out. It’s down [from our usual number of donations], but it’s a down year all around, and I think, all things considered, we really pulled through.”
Through the donation drive, Sunnking works with local businesses to recycle old or end-of-life electronics, generating funds for future programs at Camp Good Days and Special Times. E-Scrap for Camp has gifted year-round access for 114 Western New York children through its first 10 years.
The program has recycled more than 5 million pounds of electronics through its first decade, resulting in Sunnking and its Buffalo and Rochester-area partners donating more than $114,000 to Camp Good Days.
“I know that there’s a tremendous shortage this year of donors given the pandemic,” Shine says. “I think all not-for-profits are probably hurting and feeling it, and I think that this probably comes at a really crucial time.”
